No better reflection on Christ as our high priest is to be found than that offered to us in the Epistle to the Hebrews. Below are six passages drawn from it for the purpose of meditation. Read each passage slowly and meditatively. After each passage, pause to consider the glory of our High Priest and the gifts He gives us. For as Paul writes to the Ephesians, \u201cWhen he ascended on high, he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people.\u201d<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>First Meditation: <\/strong>Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God\u2019s glory and the exact imprint of God\u2019s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second Meditation: <\/strong>As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to human persons, but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters\u2026 Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third Meditation: <\/strong>Therefore, brothers and sisters, holy partners in a heavenly calling, consider that Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses also \u201cwas faithful in all God\u2019s house.\u201d\u2026 Now Moses was faithful in all God\u2019s house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken later. Christ, however, was faithful over God\u2019s house as a son, and we are his house if we hold firm the confidence and the pride that belong to hope.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourth Meditation: <\/strong>Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also, Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest.<sup>5<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fifth Meditation: <\/strong>He holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he has no need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people; this he did once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests those who are subject to weakness, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sixth Meditation: <\/strong>Now the main point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent that the Lord, and not any mortal, has set up. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; hence it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer\u2026. When Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation), he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, with the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God!
